Wellness has now become a buzz word, and that is a good thing!
What is wellness at MTM? "Wellness is a state of optimal well-being that is oriented toward maximizing an individual's potential." At MTM, wellness is an active process and includes a mind/body experience in tennis, fitness, yoga, ,nutritional and life coaching. We build a supportive community and more. Physical, mental, spiritual and social
well-being allow us to cope with the normal stresses of life, maintain good relationships, feel relatively confident in ourselves and feel engaged with the world.
Holistic health has been an interest of mine for over 40 years so when I was diagnosed with gastric cancer that was a shock to me and everyone I knew. However, my doctors assured me that my cancer was not related to diet or lifestyle and encouraged me to persist in what I had always been doing…. which included includes yoga, triathlons ( running, biking and swimming), walking and hiking, weight training, high fiber vegetarian diet . Because I also have osteoporosis, I was heavy on the weight bearing exercise- so far so good. It took a couple of months to get back to my normal routine after surgery but I did PERSIST.
I don’t have all the answers but here are some tips that hopefully can help you PERSIST in your wellness plan.
--Think holistically- Holistic is a buzz word but an important one. Only recently have medical practitioners encouraged us to consider the whole person – body, mind, spirit and emotions – in the quest for optimal health and wellness.
--Good sleep is just as important as good nutrition, breathable air and clean water. Sleep is necessary to rest and help restore mind and body. Sleep is a part of the healing process. It allows our physical systems to keep functioning, recharges our mental function, and helps us to maintain our emotional balance. Medical research shows evidence that adequate sleep helps the body to regulate:

-- Develop an exercise regimen that SUITS YOU….
We are Made to Move!! Talk to friends and professionals who can help guide you. I always thought Yoga was too slow for me. I realize it is absolutely essential for my physical and mental well-being! Exercise routines can run the gamut from marathons to yoga . There are so many wonderful ways to stay healthy that sometimes we are left swirling! The best advice I have is to PERSIST in finding what works best for your body.
--Remember “we are what we eat.” What we eat is fundamental to understanding ourselves and our culture. Our food choices affect our health. Bottom line – focus on nutrient dense whole foods, (fresh and unrefined) vegetables , fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs , spices, grains, beans and legumes. Beyond that, choose according to your specific health needs.
Ask for support and help each other. We often resist change because of the risks associated with it. Just remember “there is no one giant step that does it. It’s a lot of little steps.” And
“life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”
